Love the “gilded quilt”! (The editor and self-appointed tortoise expert in me must annoyingly point out you vibed with a turtle, not a tortoise…which are desert-oriented land-loving reptiles….)
Thank you! ❤️Ugh, you're right and I know she's a turtle. This is what happens when my editor's brain gets tired and I write the thing I don't mean instead of the thing I do and don't catch it. Thank you for catching it for me. I fixed it on Substack (can't do anything about the email.) xoxox
I notice that there are a few metaphors (the shell a gilded quilt, you a statue, the bubble body), and they really sing because there is space for us to see them. They feel organic (Jeannine's word for metaphors that aren't forced), so they don't even feel like metaphors.
It's so hard to capture the magic of a close encounter with a wild thing! You're inspiring me to try. 🙂
oooooh thank you thank you, Rita! I'm so excited that you felt like the metaphors weren't forced! the bubble body and the gilded quilt just came out and I really loved them, and the statue was a second draft. And I'm delighted this inspired you to try - I'm trying too and I think I got close with this one. :) oodles of thanks for the close read, it means a lot to me. xoxoxo
I love this. You put me right there in the water watching the turtle. So well done, Jocelyn. Are you going to take Jeannine's online course. I'm seriously considering it.

In all fairness I am one of the few nerds who would notice! (I hardly consider it a major error, I am just obsessed with 🐢)
I like them quite a bit also. ❤️
Pure magic, indeed.
Oh thank you my love!!❤️❤️❤️
Well played. I was there, briefly. Thanks.
Ooooh yay!! That’s fabulous to hear. Thank you and you’re welcome!
